Hidden Lives: A Century of Chinese American History in Ventura County presents the history of Chinese pioneers in Ventura County from 1870-1970. The book follows the journey of Chinese residents from the formation of Ventura's China Alley, through years of immigration exclusion and two World Wars.
Stories gleaned from diaries, letters and oral histories enliven the book, and provide intimate details about individuals and families who persevered in a small ethnic community. Bill Soo Hoo, the first Chinese mayor is California, is just one of the stories featured in the book. Hidden Lives documents the history of the Chinese in Ventura County for the first time, and was made possible through collaboration with the Ventura County Chinese American Historical Society.
